The Megger MOM3 is a battery-operated, handheld micro-ohmmeter for resistance measurements with test currents up to 300 A. Designed for fieldwork, the instrument is primarily used for contact resistance measurements and connection checks in low-, medium- and high-voltage installations.

Weighing 1.15 kg, the MOM3 features a rugged rubber housing and an included carrying strap, making it suitable for measurements even in hard-to-reach locations. The battery capacity is designed to support a full day of testing without recharging.

The MOM3 uses two ultracapacitors to generate the test current. Their low internal resistance enables the instrument to deliver high currents over short periods, up to 300 A at resistances up to 2 mΩ. The stored energy allows multiple measurements in rapid succession, while the test current is regulated and maintained at the selected value throughout the measurement.

The short measurement time minimises heating of the test object and eliminates the need for bidirectional measurements commonly used in micro-ohm testing.

The instrument can store more than 2,000 measurements, including timestamps, test current and resistance values. Measurement data can be transferred to a PC via USB-C. The MOM3 also supports optional Wi-Fi communication with the Megger EGIL200.

Applications

The MOM3 is used for low-resistance measurements and verification of electrical connections, including:

• Contact resistance measurements in low-, medium- and high-voltage circuit breakers
• Busbar joints and electrical connections
• Disconnecting devices and switches
• Protective earth connections
• Welding points
• Fuses and cables

Increased contact resistance can cause power losses and temperature rises, potentially leading to overheating and premature failure. Regular resistance measurements help identify such problems.
