The Hioki IR4053 is a battery-powered insulation tester designed for low-voltage installations and photovoltaic (PV) applications. It provides five selectable test voltages from 50 V to 1000 V and measures insulation resistance up to 4000 MΩ. The instrument is used for testing electrical installations, motors, wiring and equipment, as well as PV systems.
The IR4053 features a PVΩ function that enables insulation testing of PV strings even when they are live. The instrument measures the existing DC voltage of the string and compensates for it during the test, ensuring that the displayed insulation resistance is based solely on the applied test voltage.
In addition to insulation testing, the instrument measures AC and DC voltage up to 600 V. Reversed polarity is clearly indicated during DC measurements, supporting verification of open-circuit voltage and correct polarity of PV strings before commissioning or maintenance.
For routine testing, the IR4053 includes an integrated PASS/FAIL comparator. The measured value is automatically evaluated against a user-defined threshold and indicated accordingly. Threshold values can be set individually for each test voltage range and are retained in the instrument. An acoustic signal supports fast evaluation during measurement.
The instrument is rated CAT III 600 V and has been tested for a 1 m drop. The integrated hard case forms part of the instrument and provides storage for test leads and accessories, allowing them to remain connected during transport. The high-contrast display with backlight ensures clear readability in varying lighting conditions. An optional test lead with integrated remote trigger and LED illumination is available for improved usability in field applications.
